Canyon Rock Layers Coloring Page
About This Coloring Page
Horizontal rock strata stack across the canyon wall in bands of varying thickness - some narrow as a ribbon, others wide enough to show subtle surface texture within them in this coloring page. Boulders of irregular, rounded shapes cluster at the cliff base, their chunky silhouettes contrasting with the flat, ruled geometry of the layers above. Sparse shrubs push up from gaps in the rock, their small branching forms breaking the rigid horizontal rhythm of the cliff face. The layered structure here opens up a genuine geological color palette to work with - warm terracotta and burnt sienna for upper sandstone bands, cooler buff and pale ochre for compressed lower strata. Try gradually darkening each layer as it descends to suggest depth and sediment age, then use a muted grey-green for the shrubs to keep them visually distinct from the warm rock tones surrounding them.
